## Summary

Thermoset composites cure into a network rather than being repeatedly melt-shaped like ordinary thermoplastics. Epoxy can be a bulk composite matrix as well as a coating.

## Correcting the coating-only misconception

Phenol-formaldehyde resins are important in the history of wood-filled mouldings. Epoxy is used in fibre-reinforced laminates, adhesives and coatings. Research on luffa-fibre/epoxy composites provides a clear example in which epoxy is the matrix surrounding the reinforcement. It is therefore inaccurate to describe epoxy as a coating-only material. Polyurethane requires equally precise terminology: a thermosetting polyurethane system and a thermoplastic polyurethane are not interchangeable categories. Identify the actual chemistry and processing route before discussing remelting, cure or recycling.

## Coatings introduce another interface

A thermoplastic WPC can also receive an epoxy coating. That creates an interface between two distinct materials. Research on epoxidized-cardol-assisted micro-riveting investigated ways to improve adhesion between an epoxy layer and a PE-based WPC substrate. It does not show that every epoxy coating will bond reliably to every composite board.

## What a buyer should request

Specify whether the supplied item is a bulk thermoset composite, a thermoplastic profile or a multilayer assembly. For coated products, request the surface-preparation procedure, adhesion test, ageing conditions and repair method. For cured products, request the cure-control and quality-assurance records relevant to production.

Keep the end-of-life description equally specific. Do not apply a thermoplastic remelting statement to a cured epoxy laminate. Equally, do not assume that one difficult-to-separate coating makes every recovery route impossible. Ask the supplier to identify an actual route for the complete construction, including its reinforcements, adhesives and finishes.
