A cap allows the surface and core to serve different functions. Its benefit depends on the cap formulation, coverage and bond to the substrate.
Why use a layered construction? #
Co-extrusion forms multiple material streams into a combined product. For decking, a manufacturer can design the outer layer for surface requirements while selecting a different core formulation. Early Forest Products Laboratory research found improved moisture resistance in tested capped specimens.
Other work showed why the qualification cannot stop there. Experimental clear-cap systems experienced weathering-related cracking or delamination under particular conditions. Subsequent research investigated light stabilization and cap-layer design. These findings should not be used either to condemn all capped boards or to assume all caps are protective indefinitely. Specify around use #
A restaurant terrace, shaded residential deck and exposed public walkway do not impose identical demands. Identify cleaning practice, pedestrian use and exposure before deciding which surface characteristics matter most.
When considering a Green Plank product, ask for documentation for the named collection, colour and profile, rather than applying generic capped-WPC research to the brand. The useful purchasing outcome is a clear connection between product construction, installation requirements and supporting evidence. A cap is one component of that system, not a replacement for the specification.
