WPC fire performance: product ratings and assemblies

Understand why reaction-to-fire evidence must match the product, installation and intended use.

At a glance

Wood and common polymer ingredients can contribute to combustion. A composite's fire performance must be demonstrated; mineral content or a marketing label is not enough.

Key points

  • Property: Reaction to fire versus fire resistance.
  • Scope: Exact product and tested arrangement.
  • Approval: Applicable project requirements.

The technical principle #

Ignition, flame spread, heat release and smoke are different aspects of fire behaviour. Reaction to fire also differs from the fire resistance of a building element. The book explains mechanisms, but its historical American examples are not current European approval documents.

What to specify and verify #

For a European project, obtain the relevant classification report and its field of application. Check the profile, substrate, fixing arrangement, air gap and orientation covered. EN 13501-1 concerns reaction-to-fire classification; applicable project and national requirements still need competent assessment.

Application and common mistakes #

Do not transfer a decking report to a façade or interpret PVC-free as non-combustible. A change in formulation or installation may fall outside the report's scope. Review the complete assembly before specification, particularly where building height, escape routes or façade construction make fire requirements critical.

Common questions

Is an American flame-spread result an EU fire class?

No. Different methods and classification systems are not directly interchangeable.
