At a glance
The matrix binds the composite together and strongly influences processing and service behaviour. No polymer abbreviation identifies the best finished board for every project.
Understand the polymer family #
PE is polyethylene; HDPE and LDPE are members of that family with different molecular structures and typical behaviour. PP is polypropylene. PVC is polyvinyl chloride, while PS is polystyrene. Wood flour has a limited processing-temperature tolerance, helping explain the widespread use of comparatively low-temperature commodity thermoplastics in WPC. [R06,R07]
HDPE and PP are familiar options for wood-filled compounds. LDPE-rich streams require their own formulation and stiffness assessment. PVC systems require appropriate stabilization and processing control. PS-based research and products should be assessed on their own impact, processing and application evidence rather than assumed equivalent to polyolefin decking.
Ask about the finished formulation #
See the comparison table below for ask about the finished formulation.
Avoid two common shortcuts #
First, do not transfer a property from a neat-resin datasheet to a filled, foamed or capped board. Second, do not equate recycled with weak or virgin with strong. The useful comparison includes traceability, contamination control, formulation consistency and completed-product tests.
For category managers, the commercial question is whether the supplier can deliver the same qualified product repeatedly. A named resin family is the beginning of that conversation, not its conclusion.
Evidence and source scope #
[1] Research chapter; constituent behaviour.
[2] Research chapter; wood flour and thermal-processing context.
A resin comparison should lead to product-specific evidence, not a universal league table.
| Purchasing question | Why it belongs in the enquiry |
|---|---|
| What is the declared matrix? | Establishes the material identity |
| Is the recycled stream controlled? | Helps assess batch consistency |
| What happens at the design temperature? | Connects laboratory results to service |
| Are tests for the supplied profile? | Avoids substituting generic resin data |
