EPD for composite decking: how to read and verify it

Understand a composite decking EPD: product scope, carbon indicators, life-cycle modules and the checks that matter before specifying WPC or NFC.

العربيةDanskDeutschEnglishEspañolSuomiFrançaisÍslenskaItalianoNorsk bokmålNederlandsSvenska简体中文

At a glance

An environmental product declaration reports calculated environmental impacts for a defined product and life-cycle scope. For WPC or NFC decking, verify the exact board, factory coverage, declared unit, calculation rules and scenarios before using its figures. An EPD is evidence for assessment, not a certificate that the decking is environmentally superior.

Key points

  • Match the declaration to the exact product and manufacturing scope.
  • Compare equivalent installed functions, not isolated carbon numbers.
  • Keep carbon indicators, life-cycle modules and module D clearly separated.

EPD, LCA, carbon footprint and ecolabel: different tools #

Life-cycle assessment (LCA) is the analytical study behind an environmental product declaration (EPD). A carbon footprint concentrates on climate change; an EPD usually reports several environmental indicators. An ecolabel evaluates a product against defined criteria, whereas an EPD communicates quantified results under specified rules. None of these documents alone demonstrates structural capacity, slip resistance, fire classification or suitability for a particular balcony. Keep environmental evidence beside the technical specification, installation instructions and warranty, rather than treating one document as a replacement for the others.

Start with the identity of the decking board #

Check the owner, registration number, product name, profile dimensions, composition and manufacturing locations. A declaration for a solid uncapped board may not represent a hollow capped profile. Different polymer matrices, fibre contents and cap layers can change both mass and production impacts. If several products share an EPD, find the grouping method and variation information. Ask the supplier which declared result applies to the purchased code. Keep a dated copy with the order so a later website revision does not erase the basis of the specification.

Read the unit before reading the carbon result #

A result per kilogram cannot be compared directly with a result per square metre or per metre of board. Record the declared unit, product mass, usable coverage and system boundary. For an installed deck, establish how many boards, clips, joists and other components provide the required area and performance. The EPD may cover only the board, not that complete system. Confirm whether packaging and installation losses are included in the selected stage. Never assume that a lighter board provides the same span or service function.

Understand the stages without hiding missing information #

Construction-product reporting distinguishes production (A1–A3), transport and installation (A4–A5), use-stage processes (B), and end of life (C). Module D concerns potential consequences beyond the assessed product system and is reported separately. A blank cell, a non-declared module and a numerical zero are different things. Read the scenario notes before placing any result in a building model. For decking, questions about cleaning, replacement and disposal often matter as much as the factory figure. The project assessment must address stages outside the EPD scope when required by its method.

[3]

Carbon is one indicator, not the entire environmental profile #

Look at the specified climate indicators and the other reported impact categories, including resource and water-related indicators where applicable. Do not combine numbers expressed in different units into an improvised sustainability score. Separate fossil, biogenic and land-use-related climate contributions where the declaration reports them. A negative production-stage result may reflect carbon uptake in biomass; it does not establish permanent storage or a negative whole-life footprint. Likewise, a favourable climate result does not independently establish low toxicity, low microplastic release or responsible forestry.

Verify the document at its source #

Use the programme operator’s register to check status, version, verification and validity. An attractive manufacturer PDF is not sufficient if its identifier cannot be reconciled with the register. The ISO catalogue now lists ISO 14025:2026, replacing the 2006 edition. That change does not by itself tell you whether an older declaration remains usable: check the programme’s transition and validity rules. Also record the applicable construction PCR and amendments. Comparisons across methodological generations require particular care; the newer document is not automatically evidence of a better product.

Turn the declaration into a useful purchasing conversation #

Ask for the exact product-to-EPD mapping, installed mass, transport assumptions and evidence behind the service-life scenario. If a manufacturer cannot provide a matching EPD, record the data gap rather than substituting a competitor’s result. For Green Plank products, request documentation for the specified profile and production scope; a general brand description is not a product-specific EPD. Procurement teams can use the table below as an acceptance log, recording who checked each item and where supporting files are stored. This makes later substitutions easier to assess.

A practical document-checking table; it is not a certification scheme.

Common questions

Does an EPD prove that composite decking is sustainable?

No. It supplies environmental data within a stated scope. A purchasing decision also needs performance, service life, sourcing, maintenance and project-specific assessment.

Question permalink ↗
Can I use one EPD for every board from the same brand?

Only when the declaration explicitly covers those boards and its rules explain which result or conversion applies. Check profile, formulation, manufacturing scope and any declared variability.
