At a glance
A market estimate is meaningful only when its definition, geography, base year and method are clear. Forecasts should not be presented as observed sales.
Define what the market includes #
One report may cover decking alone, another all wood–plastic products, and another a broader set of natural-fibre composites. Revenue and tonnage describe different things. A regional sales figure is also different from production capacity located in that region.
The historical US industry account by Clemons is useful for understanding development, but its old market figures are not current market-size estimates. Research identifying natural-fibre applications is likewise evidence of technical scope, not a current market-share table. [R04,R64]
Build a useful segmentation #
Compare North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific using consistent definitions. Within Europe, separate the customer segments that matter commercially: residential terraces, public projects, cladding, fencing and other applications. Track polymer segmentation only when the underlying report defines how mixed or multilayer products are counted.
Trex, UFP Industries and Fiberon are names raised in many industry discussions, but this article assigns no unverified ranking or share to them. Current ownership and segment reporting should be verified before using company figures in a market comparison.
A practical European evidence dashboard #
For category decisions, track dated assortment changes, quotations, project enquiries, distributor feedback and tender requirements. Separate confirmed orders from pipeline and installed references from proposed projects. Record source and date with every observation.
This collection deliberately supplies no unsupported global market total or compound annual growth rate. A forecast with an explicit scope and method can inform planning; a large number detached from those details mainly creates false confidence.
For Green Plank, a focused record of the customers, applications and markets it can serve is more actionable than an inflated estimate of the entire composites industry.
