Can WPC be recycled? From production scrap to recovered boards

Understand the difference between recyclable WPC, recycled content and an operating recovery route, including sorting, reprocessing and quality control.

At a glance

Some thermoplastic WPC can be reprocessed, but technical recyclability and an available collection-and-recycling service are different claims.

Separate three questions #

Recycled content describes material entering the new product. Recyclability describes a possible recovery route. Actual recycling describes what happens to a particular waste stream. A board can contain recycled polymer without having an established post-use collection service.

Research assessing WPC end-of-life options found the outcome sensitive to the material and recycling assumptions. A more recent review of repeated recycling identifies performance assessment and benchmarking as continuing issues. Neither supports an unconditional promise of unlimited recycling without quality change. [R62,R63]

Production scrap is not the same as demolition material #

Clean, identified in-house material is different from a recovered mix containing unknown polymers, coatings, fasteners or contamination. A practical take-back arrangement should say what it accepts and how the material is sorted.

Questions for the supplier #

See the comparison table below for questions for the supplier.

Design for the next use #

Where appropriate, favour identifiable components, accessible fasteners and records that survive handover. Agree how removed material will be stored and collected. These editorial recommendations help make recovery practical; they do not guarantee that a local recycler will accept a specific product.

For a Green Plank specification, request the current recovery terms for the exact product and destination market. A clear answer is more useful than a generic recycling symbol.
