WPC carbon footprints: use LCA rather than ingredient slogans

Learn how to compare WPC carbon footprints using functional units, production data, transport, service life and end-of-life assumptions in a life-cycle assessment.

At a glance

A credible environmental comparison evaluates products providing the same function over a stated period. Wood content or nearby production alone does not establish the lowest life-cycle impact.

Compare the service delivered #

For a terrace comparison, define the area, intended use, service period and supporting construction. Include relevant maintenance and replacement assumptions. Comparing one kilogram of two materials can miss differences in profile geometry and the quantity needed for the project.

Research comparing wood-flour and pellet feedstocks illustrates that material preparation and transportation belong in the assessment. A WPC end-of-life study likewise shows the sensitivity of results to recovery assumptions. [R16,R62]

Account for transport without overstating it #

Shorter routes can reduce some transport requirements, but mode, load factor and actual distance matter. Calculate the route used rather than assuming that every European-made product has a lower total footprint than every imported product.

For European procurement, request production-location and transport data alongside the resin, fibre and manufacturing information. These records make a proximity argument measurable and help distinguish an operational advantage from a whole-life environmental result.

Keep biological claims separate #

The European Commission's framework distinguishes bio-based origin from biodegradability and compostability. Wood or agricultural content therefore does not establish that a PE-based board will harmlessly biodegrade.

A defensible statement #

Prefer a claim that names the assessed product, boundary, indicator and comparison basis. Avoid unsupported carbon-negative, zero-impact or percentage-reduction claims. If a quantified Green Plank environmental comparison is proposed, obtain the relevant assessment before inserting the number.

A careful LCA does more than support marketing: it identifies where the manufacturer and project team can make a real improvement.
